The Original King Alfred Running Day
Bank Holiday Monday 7th May 2018, Winchester, Hampshire
Now in its 35th Year, the annual Friends of King Alfred Buses running day returns to the streets of Winchester on Bank Holiday Monday 7th May 2018. The day will run from approximately 09:30 until 17:00.
Free bus rides will be available as we recreate routes with vintage buses to various parts of the city and beyond. Over 30 vehicles are expected to be running on the day, with the Friends’ fleet supplemented by other heritage buses and coaches of all ages from the surrounding areas.
Says FoKAB’s founder and Chairman, James Freeman:
“It’s time once again to give our many friends and supporters a chance to relive the best years of the King Alfred buses and coaches. Come with us to experience what it was like to ride on them and their contemporaries. This time we have chosen to take advantage of the May Day bank holiday on Monday 7th May which we believe will be very popular.”
Rummage until your heart is content at our traditional Transport Bazaar, held in the Winchester Guildhall, opposite the entrance to the new bus station. Join several sellers, including the famous Friends of King Alfred Buses stall, trading in books, magazines, models, photographs, and other transport memorabilia. You may find what you have always been looking for!
The Transport Bazaar will be open 10:00 until 16:00. Entry for the general public is free.
Do you have a stall and would like to sell as part of our Transport Bazaar? We still have a few stall spaces available. To find out more, please contact David Morgan, FoKAB Secretary/Trustee at 34 High Street, Nutfield, Redhill RH1 4HQ or firstname.lastname@example.org telephone 01737 823436 or 07771 828918.
Once again we are pleased to offer our unique programme/timetable for sale, giving comprehensive details of the day including times of the free bus services, details of the buses and coaches, information about feeder services, vehicle working graph, and an article from Robert E. Jowitt.
Buying a programme helps us to cover our costs of putting on the Running Day, and helps the on-going preservation and restoration of FoKAB’s heritage buses for the year ahead. These full colour quality event programmes are available on the day or in advance for £10 (plus £2 P&P for advance orders).
Due to a change in how our bank handles cheques, these will be cashed as they are received. Programmes and vehicle working graphs will be dispatched towards the end of April.
Please make sure that your order form reaches us by 28th April 2018, as regretfully we are unable to accept any further orders after this date. Do not despair however, as you will still be able to get your copy on the day!
Where Is It?
Whilst the general format of the day is similar to that of previous years, there are one or two changes.
King Alfred services will run from Winchester Broadway as always.
Other routes that are part of our running day will be based at the Cattle Market in Worthy Lane (near the Railway Station), with most services running through the City Centre en route to and from their final destinations.
We are not using Winchester Bus Station this year, and the vehicle display at St. Catherine’s P&R will move to the Cattle Market. However, St. Catherine’s park and ride will still be available for car parking (no bus or coach parking is available here – this will be available at the Cattle Market instead) and we will run a free Park & Ride bus service to and from St. Catherine’s, the City, and the Cattle Market.
Further details about City Centre stopping arrangements will be confirmed in due course.
How to get there
There are many ways you can get to Winchester to join our event.
By free ‘Feeder’ bus – details will be confirmed soon, however we anticipate that feeder services will be operating to and from the following destinations:
- Bishop’s Waltham
- Chandler’s Ford
- West Moors
By Train – travel to Winchester Station, which is a short walk away from the Cattle Market, or alternatively there are regular buses from City Road.
By Car – Car parking is free at City Centre car parks. You can also park at St. Catherine’s Park and Ride site, where we will be running a free Park & Ride service throughout the day.
By your own bus or coach – after unloading, parking is available at the Cattle Market, Worthy Lane.
By service bus or coach – Bluestar and Stagecoach will operate a Sunday Service and they will take you into the centre of the City, where you can join the event.
As well as buses
Why not use buses as part of our running day to get to local attractions and points of interest, many who are opening specially in conjunction with our event, such as the Mid Hants Railway, Twyford Waterworks, and new for 2018 – Romsey Signal Box.
Full details will be available in the programme.
